Alumni spotlight

Demonstrating a commitment to excellence
Meet Hung Tai (Rudy) Wang (’24 MBA), who works as a senior technical auditor at Mutual of Omaha. Throughout his time as a graduate student, Wang demonstrated the perseverance and commitment to excellence that characterize Ivy College of Business alumni.
Wang’s journey to Iowa State University began with his desire to further his education while balancing the demands of work and family life. “I always wanted to continue my education after being in the workforce,” he shared.
Attending the annual Business Analytics Symposium in Des Moines, Iowa, sponsored by the Ivy College of Business, solidified his decision. For Wang, flexibility was essential, and he wanted a nationally recognized program. Ivy’s online MBA program offered the perfect fit.
Returning to school after years in the workforce was initially daunting for Wang, but faculty and staff played a pivotal role in his success. One professor helped him navigate STAT 5260 after a 15-year hiatus from business statistics. “She always made time to assist me and was incredibly encouraging,” Wang recalled. Similarly, his advisor provided the guidance he needed to navigate class schedules and graduate on time, despite the challenges of being a remote student.
Group work was a cornerstone of Wang’s MBA experience.
Juggling full-time work, family responsibilities, and community involvement, he learned the importance of communication, flexibility, and accountability within a team. “We had to balance our personal and professional lives while supporting each other,” he explained. These experiences prepared him to excel in collaborative environments, a skill he valued in his current role.
“Enjoy building those relationships. The friendships and connections you make with peers and faculty will last forever.”

One of the most fulfilling aspects of Wang’s MBA journey was the connections he made with classmates and faculty. Despite being a remote student, he valued the opportunities provided to share experiences and stories with his peers. A highlight was his capstone class with Lingyao Yuan, Kingland Systems Director of Graduate Education for Business Analytics and associate professor, where Wang and his team worked on a project for a local business, applying data analytics to real-world challenges.
When asked what advice he would give to his high school self, Wang emphasized the importance of relationships. “Enjoy building those relationships,” he said. “The friendships and connections you make with peers and faculty will last forever.” He also encouraged students to deepen their understanding by teaching others and fostering strong connections with faculty.
For Wang, Iowa State’s influence extended beyond the classroom. A memorable moment was touring the campus with his son, a high school junior, and experiencing the vibrant community of Iowa State together. “Working with faculty when I was struggling was another highlight,” he said. “They were always supportive and understanding.”
Wang’s experiences highlighted the importance of connections and professional development. You’re never too far removed to begin your master’s program journey, and the Ivy College of Business is here to support you through it all.
