Former FBI deputy director and cybersecurity expert among the keynote speakers

(Ames, Iowa) — The annual Business Analytics Symposium, hosted by the Debbie and Jerry Ivy College of Business at Iowa State University, will return as a virtual event on April 6 and 7 (half-day each day). Now in its fifth year, the symposium will be accessible to analytics professionals across the country and around the world.

“This is the premier analytics event in Iowa,” said Raisbeck Endowed Dean David Spalding, “and we’re excited to launch a new format to coincide with our first virtual symposium. The event will feature four keynotes from national and global analytics leaders, sharing their insight and expertise with Iowa’s business community and our expanded audience.”

  • Teddy Bekele, chief technology officer at Land O’Lakes, Inc., will kick off the two-day event with a discussion of technology innovations driving the future of agriculture.
  • Laurie Krause, executive vice president and head of insights and analytics at Wells Fargo, will talk about how to increase the value of analytics in an organization.
  • Meredith Corporation executives Britta Cleveland and Andy Borinstein will share how Meredith has evolved into a leading content and data company through innovation and consumer insights grounded in engagement with American women.
  • Former FBI deputy director and cybersecurity expert Sean Joyce will close the symposium with the Campanile Keynote sponsored by PwC.

The keynotes will be presented over two half-day sessions, with one concurrent session each day.

Joyce is the global and U.S. cybersecurity, privacy and forensics practice leader and a member of the U.S. advisory leadership team at PwC, a global assurance, accounting, and consulting firm. He has consulted in some of the most prolific cyber breaches, providing guidance and expertise to top executives, and has briefed boards and senior executives on the challenges posed by the digital revolution, including the threat landscape, best practices in governance and lines of defense, and how to use cybersecurity and resiliency as business enablers.

Prior to rejoining PwC, Joyce was the chief trust officer at Airbnb where he led design specialists, product managers, engineers, and data scientists to help grow and defend the platform. He previously served as deputy director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, where he had daily oversight of the 36,000 men and women of the FBI and its $8 billion annual budget.

Bekele leads Land O’Lakes’ ag tech and IT organizations and is responsible for developing and implementing innovative technology solutions to help farmers and retailers produce more food while using fewer resources in new and sustainable ways. His application of technology and data to the practice of farming has shaped product offerings such as WinField United’s R7® Tool, Answer Tech, and ATLAS portal.

At Wells Fargo, Krause works across the organization to maximize business results, accelerate growth, and improve customer and client engagement by leveraging data and analytics. Prior to joining Wells Fargo, she served as vice president of market and consumer insights and customer analytics at Best Buy and held senior research and market intelligence roles at The Schwan Food Company, BI Worldwide, GMAC, and Ally Financial.

Cleveland is senior vice president for research solutions at Meredith Corporation, where she is responsible for research accountability and consumer insights for all of Meredith’s national media brands, including three of America’s top 10 magazines: People, Better Homes & Gardens, and Real Simple. She will be joined by her colleague Andy Borinstein, vice president of content strategy and insight, who directs primary consumer research for Meredith. Borinstein’s current research efforts focus on brand tracking, new product development, demographic generations, and the coronavirus pandemic.

The Business Analytics Symposium is designed for analytics professionals who work in finance, insurance, accounting, healthcare, manufacturing, and marketing. The annual event provides a high-quality professional development opportunity for analytics professionals at all career levels.
