Business for Global Good

A new study abroad experience in East Africa

As seen in the spring 2025 Ivy magazine.

As part of the Business for Global Good program, Ivy College of Business students traveled to Arusha, Tanzania, to assist a nonprofit that supports female entrepreneurs.

Students consulted with local entrepreneurs to understand their businesses and challenges in areas like marketing, finance, entrepreneurship, and accounting. After initial virtual consultations before the trip, students prepared potential solutions and then met the entrepreneurs in person to refine their ideas. The students then visited each entrepreneur’s business to observe operations and further adapt their suggestions.

The program included two weeks of travel to Tanzania, where they visited a Maasai tribe village, visited a giraffe conservation farm, and went on a safari where they saw elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo, and rhinos in their natural surroundings.

Enjoy these moments captured by business students.

“I had the incredible opportunity to travel to Tanzania with the Business for Global Good program, and it was truly eye-opening. During my time in Arusha, I worked alongside local female entrepreneurs, listening to their stories, learning about their challenges, and collaborating on ways to help grow their businesses. It was inspiring to see their creativity and dedication despite the obstacles they face. This experience reminded me why I’m so passionate about business and its power to create real impact. It wasn’t just about strategies and solutions, it was about people, relationships, and understanding how culture shapes entrepreneurship. I left Tanzania with a new perspective on my personal and professional life, as well as connections I’ll always cherish. Grateful for this journey and excited to carry these lessons forward!”

“This trip helped me learn about global business practices, collaborate with local entrepreneurs, and gain a deeper cultural perspective. My drive to help those who are less fortunate and have limited resources was cultivated on a deeper level after getting to learn about them early in the semester; I felt connected and inspired to help them in any way I could. Although the impacts are endless, the most meaningful aspect was witnessing the resilience and creativity of the entrepreneurs. Each one approaches a challenge with a level of passion and determination that is not measurable. The remarkable excursions we went on and the unforgettable sights do not fall short of being meaningful. Everything I got to see and experience will forever stay with me as one of the best opportunities of my life. It was truly life-changing to see firsthand the beauty of a different culture. For students considering a study abroad experience, all I have to say is do it!”

“I went on the Business for Global Good trip to Tanzania because I wanted a study abroad trip that would be a very meaningful and eye-opening experience, and that is exactly what it was for me! The most meaningful part of the trip was working with women entrepreneurs to help improve their businesses. It was amazing to see how successful their businesses are and learn about how much hard work they put in, and fulfilling to know how grateful they were for our advice. If you are unsure about studying abroad, I would suggest going out of your comfort zone and applying. You make so many memories, build relationships, and open your mind to many new perspectives!”
