Each year, Ivy College of Business students volunteer their time to help others prepare their tax returns, for free. As part of the Internal Revenue Service’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, accounting students help taxpayers with household incomes of $57,000 or less with basic tax return preparation services. Appointments will be offered Monday and Wednesday evenings from February 24-April 14.
Scheduling an appointment
Appointments will be conducted virtually this year due to COVID-19. The actual tax preparation process may take up to 2-3 hours, so please plan accordingly on the day of your appointment. Please note: once the appointments are full, the scheduling website will not allow you to select any of the time slots, even though you may see an open time slot due to a cancellation.
Preparing for your appointment
Taxpayers will need to provide the following information 24 hours in advance of their scheduled appointment. Instructions on how to provide the information will be provided at a later date. Taxpayers will need to provide:
- Proof of identification
- Social Security cards for you, your spouse, and dependents and/or a Social Security number verification letter issued by the Social Security Administration
- Birth dates for you, your spouse, and dependents on the tax return
- Wage and earning statement(s) from all employers (Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R)
- Interest and dividend statements from banks (1099 forms)
- A copy of last year’s federal and state tax returns
- Bank routing and account numbers for direct deposit
- Total amount paid for day care and the day care provider’s tax identification number (an individual’s Social Security number or the business’ Employer Identification Number)
To file taxes electronically on a married/filing jointly tax return, both spouses must be present at the virtual appointment to sign the required forms. You must also know whether you are being claimed as a dependent on another person’s tax return.
Because we are preparing taxes virtually, it is unlikely that you will need on-campus parking to participate in the VITA program. In the event that you do need to come to campus as part of the program, here are a few suggestions:
- Free parking is available at the East Campus Parking Deck, across Wallace Road from the Gerdin Business Building, on Monday evenings.
- Paid parking is available at the Memorial Union Parking Ramp during all sessions.
