Summit explores the financial sustainability of healthcare organizations
Healthcare management leaders from across the state gathered at the inaugural Healthcare Management Summit to discuss an important and timely topic: the financial sustainability of healthcare organizations.
The late afternoon event drew 65 healthcare management professionals, faculty, and students to the Iowa State University Memorial Union on November 12. Hosted by the Ivy College of Business and the Iowa chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), the summit originated from a smaller event in September 2024, organized by the college and the ACHE of Iowa.
David Stark (’94 management), chief of government affairs and philanthropy at UnityPoint Health, delivered the keynote address, “Future Healthcare Financial Challenges: Pressures, Policy, and Possibilities.” A Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, Stark previously served as president and CEO of UnityPoint Health – Des Moines.
Stark addressed the current regulatory climate in healthcare, the impact of recent federal legislation, and the economic headwinds facing healthcare organizations. He also stressed the importance of leveraging innovation to improve hospitals’ financial health and service delivery.
“It’s one of the most challenging times, without a doubt,” said Stark. “Everybody, every year, will say that, but I will tell you that right now is probably one of the most exciting times to be in healthcare because we’ve got a chance to deal with it. And if not us, who’s going to do it?”
An ACHE of Iowa panel discussion, “The Financial Sustainability of Healthcare Organizations,” followed the keynote. The discussion featured four executives from healthcare and insurance organizations:
- Tammy Chance, chief medical officer, Broadlawns Medical Center.
- Sandra Christensen, vice president of finance operations, MercyOne Critical Access Hospitals.
- Ashley Recknor, specialty services officer, Iowa Specialty Hospitals and Clinics.
- Melanie Teske, vice president of provider relations and engagement, Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield.
The conversation was moderated by John Meyer, executive director of business development at Mary Greeley Medical Center and associate professor of practice at the Ivy College of Business.
“This year’s summit highlighted the strength of Iowa’s healthcare community and the importance of multi-stakeholder conversations about financial sustainability,” said event organizer Natallia Gray, executive director of healthcare initiatives at the Ivy College of Business. “I’m grateful to everyone who joined us and contributed to such a meaningful evening.”
