For senior actuarial science major Claire Skogen, Iowa State University quickly became more than just a college; it became a second home. With the vibrant school spirit and the perfect distance from her hometown, Lino Lakes, Minnesota, Skogen knew it was the right fit. Choosing the Ivy College of Business aligned with her passion for actuarial science and offered the strong support system she was looking for.
Skogen has made the most of her time at Iowa State by immersing herself in opportunities that strengthened both her academic and professional journey. Skogen, an active member of Gamma Iota Sigma, says the actuarial science club has connected her with many industry professionals and internships. This involvement and experience led to a full-time role after graduation.
“Study hard but also make time to enjoy all that college has to offer.”

She credits former Ivy career coordinator, Shana Hicks, with playing a vital role during her sophomore year. “She guided me through the process of preparing for interviews, reviewing offer letters, and navigating the internship search. Her support and advice helped me feel more confident and prepared during that stage of my college career,” Skogen said.
The Ivy College of Business has also provided Skogen with countless networking opportunities through events such as Internchips and Queso, career fairs, and student organization meetings. These experiences have helped her build meaningful connections and sharpen her professional skills. Her coursework has laid a strong foundation for her future career, preparing her for the rigorous actuarial exams. But Skogen also emphasizes the importance of balance. She has embraced involvement in multiple organizations, including Salt Company, Orchesis 1 Dance Company, and the actuarial science club. Each has enriched her college experience in unique ways.
“Study hard but also make time to enjoy all that college has to offer,” Skogen advises.
Dance has been a meaningful outlet for her. As a member of Orchesis 1 Dance Company, Skogen finds joy and stress relief in expressing her creativity. It’s a great way for her to take a break from studying and gives her a creative outlet where she can connect with others who share a similar passion.
Rahul Parsa, teaching professor of finance, sees Skogen as a standout student who embodies both academic excellence and creativity. “She shows her leadership through her actions. She takes on projects or work when it comes to her, and more importantly, does a fabulous job. She does a great job of balancing different activities while doing them all at the highest quality. She gives her best in everything she takes up,” Parsa said.
Skogen’s story is one of balance, dedication, and passion. Whether excelling in actuarial science or expressing herself through dance, she embodies the spirit of an Iowa State Cyclone —hardworking, creative, and ready to take on the future.
