In spring 2021, I found myself at a career crossroads — uncertain about my next steps but eager to grow as a professional working at Iowa State University. I wanted to advance, but wasn’t sure of the best steps to make that happen. An email about the Ivy PMBA program landed in my inbox, and I saw an opportunity. I hadn’t seriously considered the tuition reimbursement option for university employees before, but I decided to take a chance.
What I didn’t anticipate was just how transformative the experience would be. The program not only strengthened my business knowledge but also gave me the confidence to take the next step. Within a year of earning my degree, I leveraged my skills and network to move into a new role with the Ivy College of Business graduate programs. This decision helped set me up to further my career at Iowa State. The Ivy PMBA program didn’t just help me meet my goals; it empowered me to exceed them.
As I sat down to write this, I started by reflecting back on the statement of purpose I wrote when first applying to the PMBA program. My first sentence said, “In its mission, Iowa State’s Ivy College of Business promises its students the vision and skills to make a difference in the world.”
Reflecting back, this couldn’t be truer than my experience. Through the program, I was able to envision where my degree could take me and the confidence to embrace and pursue new opportunities.
When I think back to my time as a student, the first thing that comes to mind are the people — my professors and my classmates. The professors were extremely understanding and supportive of us being working professionals. They were always accommodating when I asked to meet to discuss coursework and ask questions, really helping enhance my understanding of class concepts. I learned just as much from my classmates, especially during our discussion-based courses. The people I met throughout the program really gave me insight into where this degree could take me. One of the best parts of the PMBA program was working in teams. Each person brought a unique perspective, and I was able to learn just as much from them as I was learning through my classes and projects.

I ended my statement of purpose by saying, “The Ivy College of Business will give me the skills needed to confidently take steps to move forward within my career.” I can say with certainty that I would not be in my current position without taking a risk, stepping back into the classroom, and earning my MBA.
