Building Our Community

Business students help build a sense of community at Ivy

The Kingland Hub buzzed with conversation on March 8, as 139 Ivy students, faculty, and staff gathered for the Building Our Community event. The annual event is an opportunity for members of the Ivy community to learn from one another and identify ways to meet the college’s goal of continuous improvement in the areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Toyia Younger, senior vice president for student affairs at Iowa State University, delivered the opening remarks.

Participants then turned to small group conversations centered around three themes:

– feeling included in the college.
– empowerment.
– mental health and wellness.

The conversations gave students, faculty, and staff a chance to talk about their experiences in the Ivy College of Business. Discussion groups were facilitated by 11 staff members from Student WellnessRecreation Services, and Student Counseling Services.

At each table, a volunteer from Ivy Student Council or Multicultural Business Network took notes using Google Jamboard, a collaborative digital whiteboard. The goal of the event is to identify action steps that can be shared with Ivy’s Diversity Advisory Committee and Raisbeck Endowed Dean David Spalding.
