Since 1968, The Iowa State University Alumni Association has been presenting the Wallace E. Barron All-University Award, recognizing outstanding seniors who display high character, outstanding achievement in academics and university/community activities, and promise for continuing these exemplary qualities as alumni.

For the first time since 2020, an Ivy College of Business student has received the prestigious award. Emily Shatek, a senior in finance and agricultural business from Mason City, Iowa, was among five other awardees out of 24 nominated seniors.

Alongside her many involvements, she was a winner on Iowa State’s 2023 Homecoming Court and is a member of the Student Alumni Leadership Senior Class Council. Shatek also volunteers for a variety of organizations outside of Iowa State, including the Des Moines Ronald McDonald House, all while maintaining a 4.0 GPA.

“Students look up to her not only because she is a good student, but because she is a strong leader in the sense that she is determined to get things done and bring people together to make it happen,” said Amani Elobeid, teaching professor in economics and Agricultural Business Club advisor.

With her impressive resume and the lasting impact she has left on her peers, teachers and more, it is clear to see why she was a selected recipient of the award.

Shatek was honored and presented the award (a custom-made, 10K, solid gold ring) at a private lunch with Jeff Johnson, Lora and Russ Talbot Endowed President and CEO of the ISU Alumni Association, on Friday, April 26.

“I am very honored to have received this award,” said Shatek. “I wanted to make the most of my college experience, so I really tried to step out of my comfort zone with a wide variety of club involvement, course selection, leadership positions, and international travel. I have truly enjoyed my time at Iowa State and am so thankful for the professors, mentors, and peers that have helped along the way! Once a Cyclone, always a Cyclone!”
