Graduate Student Onboarding
We’re excited to welcome our new graduate students. We host you in the fall and spring semesters. Check out the full details below. Onboarding provides an overview of resources and services and opportunities to engage with your faculty and peers.
Plan to attend one of the applicable orientations listed below and make sure you have registered for classes prior to attending. You will receive communication from your academic advisor.
Onboarding for new students attending the following on-campus graduate programs will be held Friday, August 23, 8:10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. on the Iowa State University campus in the Kingland Hub, Room 1450, Gerdin Business Building.
- Full-time MBA.
- Master of accounting.
- Master of business analytics, residential.
- Master of entrepreneurship.
- Master of finance.
- Master of science in information systems.
Full Time MBA onboarding will be Friday, August 23 and Monday – Thursday, August 26 – 29 from 7:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Professional MBA (PMBA) onboarding will be held Monday, August 26 and Tuesday, August 27 from 5:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at Capital Square, 400 Locust, Suite 160, Des Moines, Iowa.
Distance/online orientation will be held Tuesday, August 20 from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. CST, through Microsoft Teams. Calendar invites will be sent to all online students in the following programs. You will want to have the most recent Teams and sign in with the same email the calendar invite was sent to.
- Master of accounting analytics.
- Master of business analytics, online.
- Master of healthcare analytics and operations.
- Master of real estate development.
- Professional, online MBA.

Register for classes using Workday
Students register for classes one semester at a time, in consultation with their academic advisor. Students register for classes in Workday beginning fall 2024. For all the details and deadlines, visit the registration page and current course offerings.
- New students will work with their DOGE or academic advisor for assistance registering.
CANVAS learning management system (LMS)
Courses will use Canvas, an online learning management tool, regardless if the courses are fully online or in-person. You will be able to access Canvas through the Iowa State sign-ons website. Most course access is created the first day of class.
Advising
Graduate programs advising varies by academic program. Visit the graduate academic advising web page for a list of advisor/Director of Graduate Education (DOGE) names to send an email to connect. You will also find sample plans for your program of interest on our graduate programs web pages.
