Curriculum

Coding experience is not necessary. Instead, our program focuses on what’s important today and what will be relevant tomorrow — analytical skills, business foundations, strategic communication, decision making, and organizational techniques.

Our core curriculum includes the following options:

  • Management information systems.
  • Experiential learning capstone project.
  • Data management.
  • Business analytics foundations.
  • Project management.
  • Business process systems.

Electives offer a more customized experience and give students the opportunity to delve into personal interests like information system security and industrial engineering. Students may also explore options from business disciplines like business analytics and finance.

In addition, the MSIS program is STEM-designated. A STEM designation is awarded to a program that has qualified curriculum which meets the criteria. This designation allows international students the opportunity to extend their Optional Practical Training (OPT) from the standard 12 months to 36 months of work authorization in the United States for pre-approved programs.

Concurrent degree options

Concurrent students are those that are earning their undergraduate and graduate degrees at the same time. Double degree options

Managers need to understand the complexities of today’s changing world. Many companies are seeking professionals who possess both a broad understanding of business operations and an in-depth knowledge of how technology works.

The MBA-MSIS double degree program combines the comprehensive management education of the top-ranked Ivy MBA with an in-depth study of information systems through the MSIS degree. The program can be completed on a full- or part-time basis.

The program requires 60 credit hours and can be completed in two years of full-time study. Students can enroll in the MSIS/MBA double degree program after initially enrolling in either the MBA or MSIS program.

International students

Important information for international students

Three-year degrees may be accepted if a WES or ECE transcript evaluation deems your degree equivalent to a U.S. four-year degree.

Otherwise, Iowa State University’s Graduate College does not accept three-year degrees from India, Bangladesh, Canada (excluding Quebec), Nepal, and Pakistan. Degrees from these countries are internally reviewed individually if submitted directly to Iowa State.

Additionally, Iowa State University’s Graduate College does not accept HNDs (Higher National Diplomas) without a top-up degree. It is acceptable if your WES or ECE course-by-course evaluation determines your three-year degree equivalent to a U.S. four-year degree.

For questions regarding internal reviews and top-up degrees, please contact gradhelp@iastate.edu.
