Sara Parris-testimonial
I am Sara Hayden Parris, current MHAO student. I grew up in Florida and Ohio and completed my BA in international studies at The Ohio State University. With no clear career plans, I decided to pursue a master’s in health care administration from Des Moines University. Upon graduation, I began working for a local hospice organization, where I gained exposure to insurance billing. Eventually, I ended up as a clinic administrator for a multi-site cardiology clinic before landing at my current workplace, Thielen Student Health Center at Iowa State University, where I am the associate director for administrative services.

I honestly wasn’t looking to further my education, but when I heard about the MHAO program, I was intrigued. Analytics and operations are two of my favorite things in my current position, and the program is truly one of a kind. I hate to pass up a good educational opportunity, so after reviewing the course list, I decided to go ahead and apply for admission. The online format works well for me as a working parent with many professional and personal commitments. I’ve been able to complete my coursework around my schedule, such as over lunch breaks and in the evenings when my kids are doing their homework.

I recently completed the supply chain management course and I took away several new skills in Excel that I can apply to my daily work in budgeting, finance, and predictions. The fact that I was so immediately rewarded with new knowledge that could make a difference in my job definitely reinforces my decision to pursue this degree program at Iowa State University. I am looking forward to future courses where I further develop my analytics skills.”
