Business Analytics

The graduate certificate in business analytics will build the necessary competency to deploy analytic skills and capabilities in various areas of business such as marketing, supply chains, operations, forensics, and risk management. The certificate is designed for graduate students and working professional currently employed or seeking job opportunities as business analysts, analytic systems designers, or data scientists who deal with problems arising in the contexts of business decision-making.

The graduate certificate in business analytics will address the challenges of dealing with issues of “big data” and its analysis to extract actionable insights. equips business professionals with the basic analytic concepts and techniques necessary in various areas of business such as marketing, supply chain, operations, forensics, and risk management. Students will have a foundation in data management, business analytics, modeling, and communicating through data visualization.

The certificate is for working professionals as well as students enrolled in graduate programs who are employed or seeking a career as business analysts, analytic systems designers, and data scientists to help improve business performance. The certificate is available online, on campus in Ames and at Capital Square in Des Moines.

The Business Analytics Graduate Certificate consists of a minimum of 12 approved graduate credits. Students must maintain a grade average of 3.0 or higher. This graduate certificate may be earned either before, after, or concurrently with a master’s or doctoral degree. At least 3 credits may not be used to satisfy any other degree requirements.

Admission to the business analytics graduate certificate program is contingent upon satisfying the following requirements:

Bachelors of Science degree in Business, STEM or related field
Post-undergraduate work experience of two or more years
A cumulative GPA of at least 3.00 in the last 60 semester/90 quarter units of study
TOEFL – 100; or IELTS – 7 (international applicants only)

Applicants must submit a statement of purpose, resume, and transcripts.

Enterprise Cybersecurity Management

In Des Moines or on campus in Ames
The graduate certificate in enterprise cybersecurity management will equip business professionals with basic concepts and techniques in cybersecurity and the management of information assets, including understanding cyber threat and choosing appropriate protections, enterprise cyber risk management, budgeting for cybersecurity, policies, procedures, human relations, and issues present in the modern organization. The certificate is for working professionals and graduate students in Ames or Des Moines.

To earn the enterprise cybersecurity management certificate, participants are required to take four approved courses (12 credits). Participants should work with Professor Scheibe to select courses prior to registration.

Students must maintain a grade average of 3.0 or higher. This graduate certificate may be earned either before, after, or concurrently with a master’s or doctoral degree. At least three credits may not be used to satisfy any other degree requirements.

Entrepreneurship and Innovation

On campus in Ames
The graduate certificate in entrepreneurship and innovation is designed to teach students the process through which new ventures are created and to ensure students understand the role of innovation in entrepreneurship.

The certificate allows post-graduate students from any discipline to learn about entrepreneurship, innovation, and the new venture creation process. The interdisciplinary certificate program provides students an opportunity to gain business skills they can use in starting a business without a large time commitment. It is flexible so that students can design a program that provides core entrepreneurship education through Management 566 as well as discipline-specific training from entrepreneurship courses in other colleges.

The objectives of the Graduate Certificate program are:

  • To teach students the process through which new ventures are created regardless of their organization
  • Enhance discipline-specific opportunity recognition, prepare students from any background to understand the process through which ideas are implemented into the market or an organization
  • Provide interdisciplinary instruction by integrating business-related entrepreneurship education with college-specific entrepreneurship training
  • To ensure students understand the role of innovation and develop creative abilities in entrepreneurship.

Successful applicants must be a graduate of an accredited institution and normally must rank in the upper quartile (3.0 GPA) of their class to gain admission.  Applicants may come from any undergraduate discipline. A record of business ownership or an entrepreneurial venture may be considered as a substitute for prior academic performance.

Students interested in the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Certificate must successfully complete a minimum of 12 credits in courses approved for use in the certificate program.  Up to 6 credits required for another degree program may also be used to fulfill the requirements for the certificate. Students should follow the curriculum requirements as listed below.

Students seeking a Graduate Certificate in Entrepreneurship and Innovation must meet minimum university criteria for admission to graduate programs. The Graduate College general requirements and application can be found at http://www.grad-college.iastate.edu/academics/programs/acresults.php?id=15.  Current graduate students at ISU need to complete and submit a Request to Pursue a Certificate in Addition to a Graduate Degree, resume and goals/interests statement.

Finance

The graduate certificate in finance provides training in investment valuation and the skills necessary to value an entire company through analysis of expected cash flows based on financial statements, growth characteristics, and risk. The certificate is for graduate students and recent graduates seeking job opportunities as investors or professional money managers, who deal with efficient asset allocation in a portfolio setting, investment performance measurement, and performance evaluation.

  • Bachelors degree; bachelors in business or related field is preferred
  • Post-undergraduate work experience of two years or more is preferred
  • GPA must meet the Graduate College admission guidelines, with at least one of the following:
    • Undergraduate degree with GPA greater than 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale);
    • Completed 9 to 14 credits of graduate coursework with grade B or better in all courses; or
    • Completed 15 or more credits of graduate coursework with GPA above 3.0 and no F grades.

GMAT/GRE scores are not required. You may take up to 9 credits as a non-degree seeking student, before being formally admitted into the program.
